Every spring Turning the Page holds its annual fundraiser, Carpe Librum (Seize the Book!). Carpe Librum consists of two parts: first, a citywide used book collection drive in March and second, the sale of the donated books in April and May. Carpe Librum evolved from our partnership with Politics and Prose and their used book sale in 2001 and 2002, and has expanded in size every year. Area organizations and individuals donate used books, CDs, DVDs and VHS tapes, which are then sold at area D.C. locations. You can support Turning the Page by participating in Carpe Librum in many different ways -- by organizing a book drive, donating books, volunteering to help sort or move books, and/or purchasing books at one of our book sales! See our volunteer page for more details on becoming a book drive host or Carpe Librum volunteer.
For our largest fundraiser, Turning the Page organizes an annual city-wide book drive, giveaway and sale called Carpe Librum. In 2007, over 150 community partners collected approximately 60,000 new and used books through Carpe Librum book drives! Thank you to all of our loyal friends, customers, book drive hosts, sponsors and supporters for making our sixth annual Carpe Librum book sale a great success. Thanks to you, we were able to sell $42,000 in used books, CDs, and DVDs! Thank you
to everyone who showed their support! We look forward to seeing you in
2008! * * * Spring of 2006 marked the fifth annual Carpe Librum used book drive and sale. More than 200 local businesses and individuals donated, resulting in over 60,000 items to offer at the sale. This past year’s sales were held at 900 7th Street NW, generously donated by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers through Akridge; and on the campuses of George Washington University, and Georgetown University. Sales at the three locations raised more than $45,000 for TTP’s programs, making this our most successful sale to date. A particular thank you to all volunteers, community members, and AmeriCorps*NCCC for making this year’s fundraiser a success! All donations were collected and sorted by AmeriCorps*NCCC volunteers. Under the guidance of Turning the Page staff, these volunteers picked up books from all around DC, Maryland, and Virginia and sorted all donations into numerous categories, readying the donated materials for the sales. Their hard work and dedication to the project was instrumental to its success. |
