Aiton Elementary

533 48th Place, NE
Washington, D.C. 20019
(202) 724-4627

Principal: Ms. Peggy Mussenden

Principal Mussenden works with her staff to create a welcoming, safe environment for students, families, and staff. Under Principal Mussenden’s guidance, Aiton has made significant strides in reading and math. This success is also due to the staff which includes library, technology, music, science, reading and Spanish specialists.

The school stresses small group instruction and has a peer mediation program to help resolve conflicts among students.

This year marks Aiton’s sixth year partnering with Turning the Page. The school, which has 455 students, is located in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood in Northeast D.C. 95% of the student population is from the Lincoln Heights housing project. Aiton students are 100% African American with 94% eligible for the free and reduced lunch program.

Students welcome Newberry Award-winning author Phyllis Reynolds-Naylor during a Fall 2006 Community Night.
