Aiton
Elementary School teachers spent part of their December Staff Development
Day brainstorming strategies for increasing family involvement.
Aiton’s Leadership Group (LG) members facilitated the hour-long
discussion. Small groups led by LG members read recent literature on family
involvement and focused on concrete ways to encourage more parents to
become involved in the school. Strategies generated include: weekly reminders
about upcoming opportunities for parents to get involved; weekly progress
reports for each student that are readable and useful to parents, and
setting clear school expectations for parents so that parents are better
equipped to become more involved. Teachers also analyzed Aiton’s
current level of family involvement and discussed the role of the family
in education today.
The Staff Development Day discussion demonstrates just one more way TTP
and the Aiton LG are working together to further the vision of Principal
Peggy Mussenden and the rest of the staff: strengthening connections between
home and school to ensure that students succeed.
